Winx wins four
- On October 30, 2018
Winx, the champion mare is now, more than ever, an icon. As the only horse to ever win four Cox Plates, she also holds the title of Australia’s highest prizemoney earner.
Last year the champion mare created history when joining the legendary Kingston Town as the only horse to win three Cox Plates, and surpassing three-time Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva to become the greatest prize money earner in Australian racing history.
This year the 7 year old Australian-bred mare, Winx, galloped to victory, defeating Benbatl and Humidor. Winx recorded her 29th consecutive win, and created history as the only horse to win four Cox Plates.
With her efforts this year in winning a fourth Cox Plate, in succession, she has moved to iconic status. Amassing a record $22,934,925 in prize money, she is now moving up the list of the highest prize money winner’s worldwide. If she continues an Autumn campaign next year, she may even reach the top position globally.
The race started from Steriline barriers, as it has for more than 20 years. The starting barriers, had a unique upgrade in 2017, where the starting barriers were themed in the major sponsor, Ladbrokes, red colour. A unique offering for a starting gate, where the padding colour can be matched to a sponsor’s colour or the race club’s colours. This not only provides the benefit of sponsorship opportunities and revenue, but also provides additional safety for the horses, jockeys and handlers.
